Cabinetry and cabinetmakers have undergone a lot of changes since cabinets were first made. Unlike their modern counterparts, early cabinets were often used to store important documents and valuables. Their likely provenance is the idea that a chest with a forward-facing opening would be easier to access than one which opens from the top.
Early cabinets, in line with their use, were an important piece of furniture and so exhibited very fine craftsmanship that befit their contents. While modern-day cabinetmakers may not get the respect they deserve, they used to be among the most highly trained woodworkers, able to design and build cabinets to meet the aesthetic requirements of their wealthy clients.
Cabinets were almost exclusively mounted on stands in the early days, but that soon led to other forms of the cabinet. Today’s cabinets come in all shapes and sizes, and the wall-mounted cabinet is the most popular iteration.
